TB/HIV Integration Services
AIC with support from CDC funded a TB/HIV integration program for 5 years. AIC and Medicines Science for Health-MSH are Jointly implementing a 5 year TB Project called ‘National Tuberculosis and Leprosy Control Program-NTLP-TRACK TB’ targeting Kampala City. AIC has taken advantage and has continued to screen all TB patients in the catchment districts where it provides services for HIV through HCT. In this regard more than 10,000 TB patients have benefited in knowing their HIV status and in getting TB treatment. AIC is a Diagnostic Treatment Centre. AIC further support HIV positive clients get screened for TB through asking them some questions. This has helped us identify early TB infection and hence get treatment. But also those not with active TB have received INH as prophylaxis and this has effectively helped HIV positive clients. Furthermore, through screening “TRAIGE’ system in AIC Centres, AIC has controlled infection of TB. More than 5,000 HIV positive clients have been screened for TB and this activity has continued even when CDC fund ended. AIC is also involved in building capacity of health workers in screening HIV positive clients as well as providing HCT to TB patients. This has increased the number of TB patients who know their HIV status in the districts we partner with. Furthermore, AIC built capacity of PHAs, PTC members in mobilizing HIV positive clients for TB screening but also TB patients were mobilized for HCT. In all, AIC has trained more than 300 health workers in TB/HIV as well as 600 community volunteers in mobilizing communities for TB screening and HCT.
